Dozens of Serb Orthodox believers swam for the “Holy Cross” in the icy waters of the Sava River in Belgrade. The water temperature was 2.6 ° C while the air temperature was 6 ° C but this did not stop the believers of the Day of the Epiphany of Christ.
11-year-old swimmer Nemanja Xhelosevic said that he felt cold despite his great motivation. “I manage to do this with the support of God, whether it is cold or not. “But it was really cold today.”
His mother, Vesna Xhelosevic, said she fully supported the initiative: “I trust him and God. I know God is with him and protects him, so I trust him. “I have faith in the strength of my son and in God.”
The other older swimmer, Bogdan Jovicic, spoke with emotion about the challenge: “It’s a little cold but when you swim for the Holy Cross there is a warmth that surrounds you.” “In fact, it is not as difficult as it seems when you see it from the shore. I’m doing this for the 18th time.
“Today is not one of the most difficult days as there is not much difference between water and air temperatures.”
Epiphany is a festival of the Christian religion that is celebrated in early or mid-January and celebrates the arrival of the “Wise Men” who came to see Christ after birth.
