The number of victims given today by Kazakh Prosecutor General Serik Shalabayev confirms that violence is the deadliest in the country’s post-Soviet history.

Shalabayev told a news conference that the victims included civilians and “bandits” killed by security forces.
“Unfortunately, there were also victims of acts of terrorism,” he said.
The official said the figure is not final and that the numbers could be updated later.
The figure provided confirmed that the violence was the worst in the country’s post-Soviet history.
Health Ministry spokeswoman Asel Artakshinova added that more than 2,600 had sought medical treatment in hospitals and 67 were still in serious condition.
