Greek media have published a statement from the foreign ministry in the neighboring country, according to which two ethnic Greeks were killed and two other members of the Greek community in Ukraine were seriously injured by Ukrainian soldiers.
The Protothema newspaper says the incident took place in the village of Granitna, located near the contact line in the east of the country, between the Kiev army and pro-Russian separatists.
The announcement states that it was three Ukrainian soldiers who opened fire after being involved in disputes with the Greeks, allegedly, for no specific reason.
After this episode, the newspaper continues, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias asked to speak on the phone with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, in order to emphasize once again the need to protect the Greek community in Ukraine.
Involved in an eight-year conflict that has killed more than 14,000 people in Moscow-backed separatist-held eastern Ukraine, Kiev is already facing the threat of a general Russian attack.
The Kremlin has amassed more than 100,000 troops around Ukraine and is conducting military exercises in Belarus. Washington has warned that war could break out at any moment.
