The Government of Kosovo gave the green light to the draft law aimed at establishing the State Bureau for Verification and Confiscation of Unjustified Assets.
The draft law, according to Justice Minister Albulena Haxhiu, was drafted by local and international experts. She said that the State Bureau aims to “verify and confiscate the unjustified property of officials, their families and politically exposed persons”. The initiative also guarantees the respect of the rights of the parties in the procedure in accordance with the Constitution of Kosovo, and international documents.
“Preventing and punishing the misuse of public funds has been and remains one of the main priorities of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo. The approval and implementation of this Law is a step forward, necessary for achieving this goal “, announced Minister Haxhiu on social networks.
The bureau will have specialized staff, but the final word on confiscation of property will be given by the court, always respecting the right of the other party to appeal. According to Haxhiu, the sentences handed down so far to a low-profile official have been ridiculous decisions and a motive for the corrupt to continue with such scandals. Therefore, as she says, the draft law on the establishment of the State Bureau for Verification and Confiscation of Unjustifiable Assets should enter into force as soon as possible. The Government of Kosovo continues to insist that there be vetting in the justice system in Kosovo, but in the Progress Report of the European Commission, undertaking a re-evaluation of all prosecutors and judges was described as worrying and as a move that represents a source serious concern ”.
