Northern Macedonia has rejected the request of the Deputy Minister of Justice of Kosovo, Blerim Sallahu to visit the convicts for the events in Kumanovo, otherwise known as the “Neighborhood of the Brave” case.
According to the reasoning of the Directorate of Prisons in Northern Macedonia, the visit can be made only by a consul of the Kosovo Embassy in Skopje, but not by officials of the Government of Kosovo.
“The Directorate for Execution of Sanctions considers that the Deputy Minister of Justice is not a consular representative of his country in Macedonia, but is a political representative of Kosovo… Therefore, respecting the law, the Directorate for Execution of Sanctions informs you that we can not accept the request to visit the convicts “, it is further stated in the explanation of the Directorate of Prisons.
The Deputy Minister of Justice of Kosovo, Blerim Sallahu, on December 8 had announced that on December 9 he would visit Skopje, as well as the Idrizovo prison and that he would meet with the leaders of the institution.
However, the visit was subsequently canceled due to lack of a formal request on his part.
The “Kumanova” case took place on May 9 and 10, 2015 in Kumanovo, when an armed group, mostly Kosovo citizens, former members of the National Liberation Army, had confronted the Macedonian security forces, while the group was stationed in this city with the reasoning “to draw the government’s attention to the non-respect of the rights of Albanians”.
During the two days of fighting, 18 people were killed, including eight police officers and ten members of the armed group. Meanwhile, 38 members of the group were arrested – eight of them were sentenced to life imprisonment, four were released, and all the others were sentenced to 746 years in prison./REL/
