At the COVID ward at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, 4 pregnant women are currently being treated. Their health condition is stable, two of them are soon expected to give birth as they are in the last weeks of pregnancy.
This is what the director of this Clinic, Jakup Ismajli, told KosovaPress, who said that from January 2021 until now, a total of 21 pregnant women have been treated in this ward dedicated to COVID.
“Currently, four patients are hospitalized in the ward dedicated to COVID for pregnant women. Two are in the 37th or 38th week of pregnancy, while two are early pregnancies, one in the 22nd week and one in the 29th week. These two pregnant women who are in the 37th week one is expected, since she has a previous birth by cesarean section, she is expected to complete (perform the birth) within a week. Other courses are in the second pregnancy and with normal birth. The condition of the patients is stable. In 2020 we had a total of 103 patients (with COVID) who sought treatment in our clinic, 47 ended in childbirth, while others were pregnancies which after treatment and treatment were released home. “And in 2021 we have 21 pregnant women (with COVID), a birth by cesarean section”, stressed Ismajli.
As new cases of those affected by COVID-19 have increased in recent days, Ismajli said that the institutions have made an early release of anti-COVID measures and this is now reflecting the increasing numbers.
“The increase in the total number of people infected with COVID is also reflected in pregnant women, so in the last two or three weeks we have had only one hospitalized patient, but with the increase in the number of recent days it can be seen that the measures have not been respected. as much as necessary, the election campaign and non-compliance with the measures, not keeping distance, I think such a release has become premature and this is reflected in the increased number of people infected with COVID, we have about 20 beds and we are “Prepared to receive patients and complete births,” he said.
As the SARS-COV-2 virus has affected a large number of health professionals in Kosovo, currently in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic there are no infected, but only 1 specialist and 3 nurses are in self-isolation due to contacts with persons infected with COVID-19 .
“At the moment we have a specialist in self-isolation and three nurses in self-isolation. We are not infected, but only in self-isolation, some have relatives and husbands infected with COVID, so they are in self-isolation until the results come out “, stressed Ismajli.
The director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, Jakup Ismajli in an interview for KosovaPress also spoke about the number of births performed in this clinic during 2020.
He said that due to the pandemic in this clinic last year about 700 fewer births were performed.
“In 2020 we had about 8 thousand 800 births, 3 thousand 120 were performed by cesarean section, while the rest were performed by normal birth. There is a decrease somewhere we had 600-700 fewer births but we had in mind that due to the large volume, a large number of patients some who had health insurance, gave birth in private hospitals but also some births were stopped in hospitals “, he emphasized.
From March 13, 2020 to February 22, 2021, over 66,600 cases of COVID-19 were registered in Kosovo, of which 1,575 patients died. The total number of healed to date is a total of 58 thousand 359 cases, while the number of active cases is 6706.
