German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to the Balkans seems to have injected new energy into efforts to set in motion the stalled dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.
The parties are moving, and according to the European Union in charge of the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, an important agreement is expected next week in the framework of the dialogue between the two countries.
The European Union announced that this is an energy agreement for Serbs in northern Kosovo.
“We will have another meeting between the chief negotiators next week. “Hopefully, we will be able to announce a very important agreement, and I am also hoping to bring the two leaders together in Brussels, for the third high-level meeting before the summer holidays.” said Lajçak.
The European Union, through its Foreign Affairs and Security Policy spokesman, Peter Stano, expects the Kosovo and Serbian delegations to finalize the energy topic next week.
“The EU expects the parties to close the energy issue next week in Brussels at the level of chief negotiators.” said Stano.
Representatives of the European Union were present at a meeting held last week in Istanbul, Turkey, between the Serbian side and the Electricity Distribution Company in Kosovo (KEDS). Since 2013, KEDS has been distributing electricity throughout the territory of Kosovo.
Authorities in Belgrade and Pristina also announced earlier this week that they were close to an agreement on resolving electricity problems for Serbs in northern Kosovo, who have not paid their electricity bills since the post-war period.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuçi., Said that the energy agreement with Kosovo is nearing completion.
