The President of Serbia, Aleksander Vučić, denied the statements of the officials in Kosovo that a meeting between him and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, is expected to take place soon in Brussels.
Vucic said that the messages coming from Prishtina about a possible meeting with Kurti are not true.
“No one has asked me about talks. I don’t run away from any meeting. Mainly him [Kurti] ran away from the meetings”, said Vucic in a press conference, the Balkan Service of Radio Free Europe broadcasts.
The new Kurti-Vucic meeting in the framework of talks on the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia was mentioned by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, in a press conference on July 4.
Vucic added that Serbia is committed to peace and that it will not forget its people in Kosovo.
“I read in the Prishtina press that Vucic is threatening. With what? Serbia needs peace, it does not need conflicts, it needs development. We do not think that it is possible to achieve anything by war or by military means. This does not mean that we will allow the persecution and killing of our people [në Kosovë]but our commitment is peace”, he said.
Vucic did not provide any evidence or details about the persecution and killings he mentioned.
At the press conference, he also commented on a video published on July 5 by Milan Radoicic, vice-president of the Serbian List – the leading party in Kosovo that has the support of official Belgrade.
In that video, Radoicic stated that “terror against the Serbian people has just begun”.
“To my people in the north of Kosovo and others, I just want to say: I’m here, I’m back and you know what that means, there’s no going back from here,” Radoicic said in the video.
Radoicic is on the US blacklist, due to suspicions that, together with the businessman from the north of Kosovo, Zvonko Veselinovic, and several other Serbs, they belong to corrupt networks that are connected to international organized crime.
Asked how he comments on Radoicic’s statement, Vucic said that “every Serb has the right to live where he wants”.
“And where should Milan Radoicic be, who is from Kosovo? Or would you rather we take out and command people from the north [i Kosovës] to retreat to central Serbia? Where he is, is his private matter. This has nothing to do with the state. Does it bother you that someone is in his home, in his hearth? Do you want to expel him? Is the idea to expel the Serbs from Kosovo?”, answered Vucic.
“What I care about is what the message of the video is. Ask him what he wanted [të thotë]”, Vucic added.
The Prosecutor of the Basic Prosecution in Ferizaj, Rasim Maloku, confirmed for Radio Free Europe that the Kosovo Police should arrest Radoicić if he trespasses on the territory of Kosovo, because there is currently an arrest warrant, due to his suspected involvement in the case known as “Brezovica”.
Relations between Kosovo and Serbia have worsened after the Government of Kosovo, on June 29, made a decision to re-register cars with license plates issued by the authorities of Serbia, with RKS (Republic of Kosovo) license plates.
The Government of Kosovo has also decided on reciprocity on Serbian documents, which means that all those persons who enter the territory of Kosovo with Serbian documents will be provided with a certificate at the border that replaces those documents.
The Government of Serbia has reacted harshly to these decisions, while Vučić has said that he will not allow the “persecution of Serbs”.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vucic said he was glad the European Parliament had not accepted a proposal to suspend membership negotiations between Serbia and the EU because of Belgrade’s stance on the war in Ukraine.
Vucic said that official Belgrade will continue to act in accordance with the state’s interests.
“There was an attempt by some members of the European Parliament to vote for the termination of negotiations with Serbia. We are glad that it was not voted on, because it would be a mistake… I thank the majority in the EP for not accepting it”, Vucic said.
The European Parliament approved a resolution on Wednesday, which states that the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia for the normalization of relations should be “based on mutual recognition”. This is the first time that mutual recognition is mentioned in an official document of a European institution.
With this resolution, the European representatives have also called on the authorities in Serbia to “show real commitment to the values of the EU”, as well as “to harmonize with the decisions and positions of the EU in foreign and security policy, including sanctions against Russia”.
Russia’s ally Serbia is the only country in the Balkans that has not joined Western sanctions against the Russian state, which has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine since February 24.
