In a move that takes the country one step closer to NATO, the Kosovo executive decided to set up an inter-institutional working group on membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
At the Government meeting, Prime Minister Albin Kurti clarified that the main objective of this group will be to advance the NATO integration process, strengthen Kosovo’s presence in regional and international security organizations and mechanisms, as well as cooperation with strategic international allies. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora in Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, stressed that NATO membership is an urgent issue, citing the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
“Kosovo and other pro-Western democracies in the region are facing more and more destabilizing actions, provoked by Russia through its subordinates. Given the current context of unprecedented Russian aggression against Ukraine, and the intentions to destabilize and minimize all Euro-Atlantic progress and the threat to global peace, Kosovo’s NATO membership is as urgent as ever to solidify the security architecture in the region and Europe “, was her comment.
Gërvalla will be the leader of this group, while its members are the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister of Justice. Representatives will be from the Presidency, the Prime Ministry, Kosovo’s representative for relations with NATO, the Kosovo Embassy in Brussels and the Kosovo Ambassador to the United States.
