The Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, in a meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, stressed the need to unblock the European integration process for Northern Macedonia and that the moment is now.
The focus of the meeting was the process of integration of the region into the EU and the dangers arising from the war in Ukraine. The integration of Northern Macedonia and the region into the EU is more than necessary for the countries themselves, as well as for the region in general, but no less important for the European Union itself, both politicians stressed. The time has come to unblock RMV’s European integration, because otherwise this issue could remain open for a long time and would not be to the benefit of either party.
Prime Minister Kovacevski stressed that his expectations are that the dialogue with the Bulgarian side will end in accordance with the principle of respect for European values and talks based on respect for dignity. These principles were also agreed with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Petkov, when the Skopje-Sofia dialogue was established, Kovacevski said. “Our country has fulfilled all its obligations and continues to act fully in line with the policies of the European Union. It has once again proved that it is a serious partner of European countries and deserves to hold its first intergovernmental meeting with the EU.” stated the Prime Minister of RMV Dimitar Kovacevski.
Varhelyi optimistic about the first RMV-EU intergovernmental conference
At the end of his official visit to Sofia, EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi expressed optimism that negotiations between the EU and the RMV should begin in June this year. “I ended my visit to Sofia with the hope that we would be able to continue our enlargement policy, especially after the war started by Russia. “I thanked the Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov for the open discussion, for the next steps that will lead us to the opening of the first Intergovernmental Conference between Northern Macedonia and Albania with the EU,” Varhelyi said.
Washington also supports the RMV for EU membership
A day after Varhely’s visit, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried arrives in northern Macedonia. The State Department has confirmed that Donfried, in meetings with Northern Macedonian officials in Skopje, will express strong support for the country’s EU membership negotiations and thank them for their assistance to Ukraine. Donfried will call on Northern Macedonia, as the newest member of NATO, to continue working closely on a range of regional security and defense issues to promote regional democracy and stability.
