The head of the Russian Duma parliament, Vladimir Gutenev, said yesterday that the country’s secession from the SWIFT system of international payments, as being discussed in the package of sanctions for Ukraine’s vacation, could be an advantage for Russia.
“If they manage to take such monstrous measures, which in my opinion would destroy the global financial system, we can have a number of benefits,” he said.
According to Gutenev, many other countries will leave the US SWIFT system by choosing other alternatives such as the Russian SPFS system – for financial transfer messages, which has been launched since 2016.
That’s why both Russia and other SWIFT “withdraws” will escape the watchdog of US intelligence, which Gutenev said the SWIFT system is “absolutely transparent”.
“Almost all payments made in our country are for them an open book. “And with this nudity of confidential financial information, they can cause competition problems in global markets.”
“Although SWIFT is used by 11,000 financial institutions, it is not a universal system, not to mention that it is not possible to exclude Russia at the request of the United States alone,” Gutenev said.
“The US can not exclude us without excluding the EU. “Theoretically, they can make the decision together with the EU, but I do not believe that will happen,” Gutenev added.
