The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuçiç, told Radio Television of Serbia on June 6 that he was dissatisfied with the atmosphere created in the world due to the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, and that in connection with this visit, ” hysteria ”.
“In many talks, Serbia was asked to cancel the visit,” Vucic said, adding that Serbia was not allowed to talk to the Russian foreign minister.
Lavrov had planned to visit Serbia on June 6th, but Northern Macedonia, Montenegro and Bulgaria refused to allow his plane over their airspace.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the move by the three countries was a “hostile act”.
The announcement of Lavrov’s visit to Serbia came days after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic agreed in a telephone conversation on May 29 on a new deal to supply Serbia with Russian natural gas.
Lavrov and Putin are on the sanctions list of many Western countries over the invasion of Ukraine. The only countries in Europe they can travel to are Belarus, Moldova, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Vucic said that Serbia condemns the Russian attack on Ukraine in accordance with international law, but Russia is a traditional friend of Serbia, reports REL.
Serbia is the only country in the region that has not imposed sanctions on Russia, but Belgrade has backed several UN resolutions condemning Russian aggression.
Vucic added that Serbia would maintain its policy of “making decisions independently”, but that it should accelerate its path towards European integration. “I expect the new government to strongly lead the way to European integration, but also to maintain independent policy“, He said.
Asked about the announced visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Serbia on June 10, Vucic said that Germany is Serbia’s main trading partner and has recently become a major investor.
He added that he had been informed in advance by Scholz’s office that the German chancellor would go to Serbia despite Lavrov’s visit.
Scholz will pay a two-day visit to the Western Balkans, Greece and Bulgaria. This tour is expected to focus on the European perspective of the Western Balkan states, the German contribution to improving regional co-operation and overcoming bilateral blockades.
