Russian President Vladimir Putin has fired one of his top generals, Roman Gavrilov, convinced that the 45-year-old deputy commander of the National Guard had leaked classified information and misused much-needed fuel for Russian forces.
Gavrilov was detained by the Russian Federal Security Service, as confirmed by three trusted sources according to the investigative site, Bellingcat.
Meanwhile, images posted on social media showed the Russians rushing out of a pro-war rally in Moscow on Friday at Luzhniki Stadium marking the eighth anniversary of Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, where Putin addressed the crowd, saying that “they had not seen unity like this for a long time.”
According to Newsweek, people have been seen fleeing since half an hour after the rally opened. Russia’s interior ministry says 95,000 people were in the stadium and another 100,000 were waiting outside. But for many of them, this did not seem to be a personal choice.
“They put us on the bus and brought us here,” one participant told the BBC. Even some of the people inside the stadium, including many public sector employees, claimed to have been under pressure from employers to go to the rally.
