The former Manchester United striker has said he will not watch the 2022 World Cup, citing the “cruel” treatment of stadium workers as the reason.
French football legend Eric Cantona has spoken with harsh rhetoric recently at this year’s World Cup in Qatar, sharply criticizing the slave treatment of stadium construction workers and stating that the tournament “is all about money”.
“I do not worry about the World Cup, because for me it is not a championship at all,” the former Manchester United striker told yesterday the Daily Mail.
“In recent decades we have had many Olympic or football events in developing countries like Russia and China. But Qatar is not a country that plays football. “I am not against the idea of organizing the event in developing countries to promote the beautiful game of football, such as the championships of the 90s in the US or South Africa.”
“But in Qatar the truth is that there is no such potential. “There is nothing but money, I believe.”
The 55-year-old further referred to a report in the Guardian daily last year where it was reported that 6,500 Asian immigrants had died working in Qatar since the announcement of the country hosting the World Cup.
The news has been criticized by the media and the Guardian has been charged that sought to attract attention by implying that employees were dying by building Qatar World Cup stadiums.
Meanwhile it is officially confirmed that only 1 percent of the deaths were related to the construction work of the plants.
Cantona added that most footballers have a simple background and that the “meritocracy” of the sport gave them the chance to “save themselves and their families”.
“If football meritocracy is its essence, it is strange that the World Cup is organized in Qatar,” he said.
Cantona’s comments were met with mixed reactions, with some acknowledging his stance while others accusing him of not mentioning previous host locations of the famous event.
