Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has given an ironic response to the famous actor turned eco-activist Leonardo DiCaprio, who had called on the country’s youth to vote in the October 2 presidential election to protect the Amazon rainforest and “for change “, meaning the removal of the right-wing president from office.
DiCaprio, who has previously criticized Bolsonaro’s environmental performance in his country, wrote yesterday on social media that “Brazil is home to the Amazon rainforest and other ecosystems essential to the planet.”
“What happens there matters to all of us, and the youth vote is the key to driving change toward a healthy planet,” DiCaprio wrote, accompanied by a link to the election registration page.
But in an ironic twist Bolsonaro responded to him with a message suggesting that the Hollywood star was in fact supporting him in the upcoming election.
“Thank you for supporting Leo! It is important that all Brazilians vote. “Our people will decide whether they want to maintain sovereignty over the Amazon, or whether it should be managed by speculators serving foreign special interests,” Bolsonaro wrote ironically.
The president then posted a photo of DiCaprio’s Instagram post arguing that the actor had used an old 2003 photo to illustrate fires in the Amazon rainforest in 2019.
“There are some people who want to arrest Brazilian citizens who make such mistakes in our country, but I am against this tyrannical idea. “So I forgive him, greetings from Brazil”, wrote the 67-year-old.
DiCaprio has previously backed calls from environmental groups calling for government conditioning there to protect the Amazon rainforest, often described as “The lungs of the planet.”
But the attempts have been in vain and Bolsonaro has rejected them as interference in the sovereignty of the country.
However, support for the president has been declining since the country was hit by the pandemic.
Polls show he lags behind rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
