There are fewer goats, sheep and cows in Albania. The abandonment of villages has led to a decline in livestock numbers.
According to the Agriculture Expert, Ndoc Fasllia, farmers give up the livelihood because this agricultural sector is not sufficiently subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture:
“The decrease in the number of farmers in the village in rural areas has led to a decrease in the number of livestock in the country. The second reason is the bankruptcy of large and small livestock complexes and this has come about due to the high costs of domestic production. Most of this cost is accounted for by food, which 80% comes from imports. This has led to rising milk costs and thus shortages in the domestic market”.
If we compare the subsidy scheme of Albania with that of Kosovo, our country gives very little money to livestock. Specifically, from the National Scheme, livestock with small livestock does not receive more than 3 million old lekë, while the farmer who breeds cattle does not give more than 5 million Lekë. While in Kosovo the farmer receives 85 euros per cow and 20 euros for small livestock. Also in Kosovo, from the Ministry of Agriculture receives 0.6 cents per liter of milk.
“What has significantly affected is the total lack of subsidies for the livestock sector for production. The government’s focus on subsidies in recent years has been not on stall and field production, but on businesses and collection points.“, Says Fasllia.
“In Albania, from 45% of the population that deals with agriculture in the next 10 years with this policy will remain only 10-15 of the population that will deal with agriculture and livestock.”
