Scorching temperatures have already gripped the globe, but the United Kingdom has set an unprecedented heat record, with temperatures there exceeding 40 degrees and authorities say they will rise even further.
The homes of British people who have never needed air conditioning until now are on fire.
Unaccustomed to such temperatures, Britons say they are experiencing days of hell.
Paul Fairweather: I didn’t sleep at all almost all night it was very hot and it’s feeling even hotter today.
Joanne Laspand: I can’t wait for some rain, this weather is stifling, temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees are what is normal for us.
Experts blame climate change for the latest heat wave and note that more frequent extreme weather will only get worse in the coming years.
“We have been warning for a long time that climate change is greatly affecting human health and therefore we are taking measures to achieve zero carbon. We need to switch to renewable energy sources as soon as possible”said Maria Neira, WHO Director.
The situation is not better in other parts of Europe either, France, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Germany and Belgium are facing suffocating heat and deadly fires that have claimed 1100 lives so far.
Meanwhile, in the US, about a third of the population is under a heat alert on Tuesday and Wednesday, as temperatures are expected to reach their peak today and tomorrow in most of the country.
Nearly 20% of the US population, or about 60 million people, are likely to see a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius this week.
