Protesters released rotten tomatoes today in the first public appearance of French President Emmanuel Macron since winning the election at the weekend.
The president met with voters at the Cergy market in northwestern Paris when he became the target of an attack that sparked panic among his bodyguards.
Leader of the ‘En Marche!’ Movement escaped direct hit by the tomatoes but his guards panicked shouting ‘Projectile!’ (Upcoming object!) As they try to defend the leader.
They then opened a tent as Macron held his hands over his head trying to protect himself from the rain of small tomatoes that continued to fall next to him.
The president is heard saying, ‘not serious’, before being escorted away by the guards.
From another point of view it looked like a protester who jumped into the crowd from a table starting a scuffle, before being stopped by the authorities.
This was the first time Macron has appeared in public since Sunday’s election following today’s visit to the Elysee Palace.
“I came here to hear everyone’s voices, because I am committed to the troubled areas and all the territories of the republic,” he told voters today.
On Monday morning after the announcement of the election result a man armed with a knife in the Mediterranean city of Nice shouted ‘We must kill Macron’ before shooting a priest and a nun in an unprovoked attack.
Police later arrested the 31-year-old from Fréjus, for the attack on the church of Saint Pierre d’Arène.
Macron defeated Le Pen by 58.5 percent to 41.5 percent of the vote Sunday. His inauguration ceremony will be held on May 13th.
