After the partial reconstruction of the government in which there is not a single representative from the opposition, French President Emmanuel Macron today called on his ministers to “hold fast”, be ambitious and show willingness to compromise.
As Macron’s political option lost an absolute majority in the Lower House of Parliament in the June elections, the president and his government will have to negotiate support for almost all opposition legislative proposals.
“We must accept that the opposition parliamentary parties refuse to be part of the government’s agreement,” Macron said during the first Council of Ministers.
Describing the new political landscape as “extraordinary”, Macron said he wanted from the government “great ambition because the country needs reforms … but also a spirit of responsibility to reach demanding compromises”.
Key positions in the French government remained unchanged, so Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire will remain in their posts, signaling no political turnaround.
Olivier Veran, who as health minister was the “face of the crisis” for most of the coronavirus pandemic, was appointed as the new government spokesman.
Among the government’s new appointees is Laurence Boone, deputy secretary-general and chief economist of the OECD, who replaced Clemon Boone as Minister for European Affairs, while Boone became the new Minister of Transport.
