Emmanuel Macron’s office has issued a statement saying that in a phone call with Putin, the French leader demanded an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.
Macron also expressed his concern about the situation in Donbas and Mariupol and called on Russia to allow evacuations from the Azovstal plant to continue, the French president’s office said.
He called on Russia to “fulfill its responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council, ending this destructive aggression,” the statement said.
Macron has faced some criticism for his efforts to keep the dialogue open with the Kremlin, engaging in numerous phone calls with Vladimir Putin since the beginning of the occupation.
