French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Moscow and Kiev next week in a bid to mediate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, French authorities announced.
Macron will first meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, and is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the next day.
The French president has recently spoken several times on the phone with both leaders. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also plans to travel to Moscow “soon”.
A meeting between Macron, Scholz and Polish President Andrzej Duda is also planned in Berlin.
According to the Presidential Palace in France, the date is not yet known but is expected to be made public in the coming days.
Both Germany and France have mediated in the Ukraine conflict for years. Given the deployment of more than 100,000 Russian troops in the border area with Ukraine, there are fears that the Kremlin is planning an invasion of Ukraine. Moscow denies this.
It is also thought that the Russian side wants to arouse fear to persuade NATO to make concessions, reports DPA./REL/
