Emmanuel Macron secured another five years at the helm of the French state after a convincing victory over rival Marine Le Pen.
Macron won by 58.55% to 41.45%, a larger margin than expected. The center-‘s leader told excited supporters at the foot of the Eiffel Tower that the election was now closed and that he would be a “president for all”, conveying a message of unity.
Macron: We need my friends, to be gentle and respectful, because our country is full of doubts, with so many divisions, so we need to be strong, but no one will be left behind.
Macron thus becomes the first incumbent president of France in 20 years to be re-elected to this post. Despite the loss, Le Pen, 53, said her significant share of the vote still marked a victory in itself.
Marine le Pen: My thanks go especially to our compatriots in the provinces and villages, but also to foreign lands, who helped me pass to the second round with an extraordinary strength that honors me and touches me sincerely. I have no resentment today. We have been buried a thousand times and a thousand times history has proved that those who predicted or wished for our death were wrong.
The far-right rival, Eric Zemmour however, put his finger on the wound emphasizing that Marine failed just like her father before her; “This is the eighth time the Le Pen name has been hit by defeat,” he said.
Marine Le Pen took over the leadership of the party founded by her father Jean-Marie Le Pen in 2011 in a bid to make her more acceptable and capable of winning the election. She herself secured more than 13 million votes Sunday, with a platform that envisioned tax cuts to manage the high cost of living, a ban on wearing the Muslim headscarf in public, and a referendum on immigration control.
Left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who was narrowly defeated by Le Pen in the first round of voting two weeks ago, was fierce with both candidates. Although he considered it good news that France had refused to entrust its leadership to Le Pen, he said Macron had been elected in a worse way than any other president. “He is swimming in an ocean of abstentions and empty and broken ballots,” was Melenchon’s comment.
