French President Emmanuel Macron supported the economic development of the American company Uber in France and signed a secret “agreement” with it when he was minister of the economy in 2014-2016.
This fact has been brought to light by an international media investigation, named “Uber Files”. The investigation is based on 124,000 confidential internal documents of the company, on which the prestigious British newspaper The Guardian has shed light.
Forty other international newspapers, including France’s Le Monde and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), also participated in the analysis of the documents. Research showed that Macron struck a secret deal with Uber to “make France work for him, in ways that Uber works within France and for France,” a simple exchange, says Le Monde, which points out that Macron made the move at a time when tensions between taxi drivers and ride-sharing companies were at an all-time high.
Macron promised “a drastic simplification of the legal requirements” to obtain a ride-sharing license after French courts ruled UberPop, one of the ride-hailing company’s European brands, illegal in 2015 after lawmakers passed the so-called Law on Taxis. Macron allegedly went so far as to almost apologize to Uber after the law was passed, which was expected to “disrupt” the traditional taxi market.
Verifications show that Macron held several meetings with Uber executives, which he has not made public.
