The OSCE Presence in Albania praised the process of the by-elections on March 6 in our country, but with some reservations.
The OSCE stressed that there is still much to be done in Albania to increase the integrity of the electoral process.
She says that she is ready to contribute to the electoral reform and that she remains the main partner of the CEC in the efforts for better elections.
“An important milestone for the elections in Albania was reached today. For the first time in the 30-year history of pluralistic electoral processes, the election result was certified without any contestation. The OSCE Presence congratulates the election administration and political parties on this significant development, which reaffirms the professionalism of the Central Election Commission. We are confident that they will preserve this important achievement, as Albanian citizens deserve elections where every vote is respected. As Commissioner Celibashi said, there is still much to be done to increase the integrity of the electoral process and to guarantee international election standards. “The OSCE stands ready to contribute to electoral reform and remains the CEC’s main partner in efforts for ever better elections.” according to the OSCE Presence.
The CEC announced the day before the final result of the March 6 local by-elections held in six municipalities.
The Socialist Party managed to get five municipalities out of six, while in Shkodra Bardh Spahia won, part of the “House of Freedom” coalition of Sali Berisha, LSI and PDK.
DP led by Lulzim Basha not only failed to get any municipality in these elections, but was declared the third force with fewer votes than Berisha’s coalition.
The March 6 elections had a great value for the democratic electorate, where it was expected to show the support of the Democrats who for months now have been divided on two fronts, those who support Basha and those who support Berisha.
The March 6 elections brought divisions within the DP, with most Democrats demanding Basha’s resignation and the holding of elections for a new president.
Winners of the March 6 elections in six municipalities of the country:
