March 8: Chancellor Angela Merkel draws attention to further efforts for gender equality. Right now, during the pandemic, equality is needed in all spheres of society, the chancellor calls.
Chancellor Merkel thinks that in the time of the coronavirus, women are often more busy. It is again women who have to face the difficulties between homeschooling, childcare and their profession, she emphasizes in her podcast.
Chancellor Angela Merkel draws attention to further efforts for gender equality. If you take a look at the leading sectors in the economy, but also in politics, you will notice that “we have not yet reached the target,” the chancellor said in her weekly podcast.
It cannot be accepted that “women contribute massively to our society and at the same time do not participate as equals in important decision-making in politics, economics and society,” Merkel said, referring to March 8, International Women’s Day. March 8 draws our attention to “always being critical and asking what is still missing on the road to gender equality.”
Over 75 percent of women in the health sector
At the same time, she warns not to allow the coronavirus crisis to “take us back to the old role model we thought we had overcome.” It is mainly women, who with their tireless commitment in the social and health care sector currently have a lot of workload, the Christian Democratic Prime Minister draws attention.
Merkel emphasizes that in the health sector over 75 of the employees are women, but only 30 percent are women in leading positions in this sector. Right now, during the pandemic, equality is needed in all spheres of society, the chancellor calls. “For this, women should be paid as much as men.”
