The 18-year-old gunman who attacked a school in Texas on Tuesday was able to enter the building unhindered, police say.
Texas Police Chief Victor Escalon said no armed guards stopped the assailant as police entered the school four minutes after the perpetrator was there.
“We have reports that a school district police officer confronted the suspect who was entering. This is not correct, the author entered without hindrance. So from grandma’s house to the bar and from there to school, he was not stopped by anyone. “During the investigation we did, it seems that the school was open.”
Author Salvador Ramos killed 19 students and two teachers and injured at least 17 others. According to regulations in Uvalde County, authorities must have officers patrolling school entrances, parking lots and perimeter.
While teachers are told to hold the doors with the key all the time.
Officials say they do not yet know how many bullets the teenager fired during the incident, but a source told CBS News that the gunman had over 600 bullets. Investigators meanwhile have found no indication that the gunman had a history of mental health problems or criminal record.
Meanwhile President Joe Biden and the first lady of the US will visit Uvalde on Sunday, the White House announced.
