Israeli authorities on Sunday warned people to stay away from the shores of the Mediterranean to avoid massive tar pollution as thousands of workers and volunteers worked to clean up the contaminated beaches.
Strong winds and waves as usual unusual, covered the entire Mediterranean coast of Israel, on Tuesday and Wednesday, with tons of tar, in a stretch of 160 km.
The Ministries of Interior, Environment, and Health urged people to avoid beaches until further notice.
Exposure to tar could harm public health, they said in a joint statement.
“It is a great disaster. It can not be described in words. “As long as it is cold, there is no problem, but when the pot is heated, the tar will soften and liquefy.”
The tar, which has killed many sea creatures, was apparently the result of tens of hundreds of tons of oil spilled from a ship. A massive clean-up operation was launched and involved thousands of volunteers and soldiers.
