The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, said in a video message on Tuesday that “the enemy is on the outskirts of the capital,” adding that the Ukrainian army is prepared to defend Kiev.
“Our Armed Forces, the Territorial Defense Forces, are historically fighting for our country“, Said Klitschko.
He pointed out that numerous fortifications and checkpoints had been built at the entrance to the city.
“I ask everyone to keep calm, do not go out unnecessarily and take shelter in case of alarm“, Said Klitschko.
A 60-kilometer-long military convoy consisting of armored vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery has arrived on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, citing satellite imagery by Maxar Technologies.
Also in a video message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that protecting Kiev was “the government’s top priority.”
He stressed that Kiev is special and if it is protected, the whole state is protected.
“This is the heart of our country and it must continue to beat,” Zelensky said.
Citing the President’s comments, Klitschko said that Russian forces seek to “take the heart of our country.”
The mayor stressed that the people will fight and will not give up Kiev.
