Recent reports put 30,000 murders linked to drug gangs in Mexico in the last year alone, prompting condemnation from Pope Francis after the killing of two Jesuit priests a week ago.
A video purported to be from Mexico’s most brutal cartel, the Jalisco Nueva Generation Cartel (CJNG), calls for fighting between criminal groups to avoid hurting people not involved in the conflict.
The two Jesuit priests and their guide were killed earlier this month in a suspected clash with members of trafficking gangs in the state of Chihuahua, a crime that was widely condemned by the local and international community.
The daily St Kitts & Nevis Observer reported that more than 30,000 people have been killed in Mexico in the past month, the vast majority linked to clashes between drug trafficking organizations.
“I ask you that the war remains between us, without including those who should not be included, we, both sides, are for the protection of people”, it was said in the strange message.
The ‘semi-militarized’ cartel’s message, written on behalf of its leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, otherwise known as “El Mencho”, urged rival gangs across the country to spare the lives of doctors, teachers, medical staff or other health professionals. community.
Former local crime expert Oseguera said the CJNG cartel has now become a criminal empire spanning several continents, rivaling the rival Sinaloa organization once led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is serving a life sentence in USA.
Guzman previously oversaw extensive operations transporting cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and manufactured heroin, which was then distributed in the US and Europe.
