A Dominican Republic government minister has been shot dead in his office by a childhood friend, local media reported.
Orlando Jorge Mera, 55, was in a meeting in Santo Domingo when gunman Miguel Cruz entered the office and shot him dead.
Authorities say Cruz has been arrested.
In a statement Mera’s family said Cruz had been friends with the minister since childhood.
“Despite what happened, we forgive the person who did it. “One of Orlando’s great habits was not to hold grudges,” said the family.
Police and emergency services rushed to the ministry of environment and natural resources in the capital following the news of the attack.
Local media said they had heard a total of seven shots. The attacker who had entered alone had managed to leave.
Bartolom Pujals, the government’s innovation minister, said the death was a “tragedy”.
“We Dominicans have reached an agreement of peace and coexistence, we have said no to violence,” he said.
Mera was a minister from the Modern Revolutionary party in the coalition.
He was appointed Minister of Environment in August 2020.
