A man has been held captive in a cold hut without heating or lighting for more than 40 years in Britain, wrote today the daily ‘The Sun’.
The person who is already in his 60s has lived most of his life in a cold hut in Hadrian’s roller coaster park in Carlisle, in the north of Britain.
56-year-old Peter Swailes Junior, admitted the extreme exploitation of a defenseless worker and the crime of modern slavery yesterday in the court of Carlisle, according to the local network MEN.
Swailes was initially charged along with his father, also named Peter Swailes – who died before the trial could begin.
They denied allegations of facilitating an individual’s trip in order to exploit him, filed in 2015 and 2019.
Swailes has already been released on bail and will appear in court on February 4 to receive his sentence.
Investigator Martin Plimmer said: “First of all my media is with the victim, who has been exploited throughout his adult life until a few years ago.
“He is already in his 60s, something that is difficult to understand, for four decades he has been held as a slave.”
The charges came after several years of investigation by the anti-gang unit and manpower abuse, by Cumbria regional police.
Investigators had conducted the search according to the mandate in the roller coaster park in October 2018, when they encountered the wooden hut about 2 square meters.
After knocking they discovered the victim who had lived there for 40 years.
Officers said the hut was in poor condition, without heating and a window did not close well.
During questioning the victim said he had worked in the field for about 10 pounds a day.
Swailes was arrested in April 2019 and later charged along with his father.
The victim accepted the protection of government mechanisms and was accommodated on the outskirts of Cumbria.
