Disputes over the procedure for approving the decision to impose sanctions on Russia led to the suspension of the government meeting in Montenegro.
“The reason for the adjournment of the session is not only in the procedural part, but also in the lack of respect and improper behavior of Foreign Minister Radulovic towards Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic,” a government statement said. Regarding the situation, Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic held an extraordinary press conference, announcing the Prime Minister’s position on sanctions against Russia.
“Everything was fine until we got to the points that had to do with the imposition of sanctions on Russia, which passed to government commissions. We came to a situation where the Prime Minister proposed new conclusions, which aimed to make the decision on sanctions meaningless. We can not make these things meaningless in relation to Montenegro’s international reputation. “The conclusions were very clear and harmonized with what was adopted by the Council of the European Union, and everything beyond that is neither legally nor politically valid.” said Abazovic.
The Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister also said that “The government is in a technical mandate and that it is made up of people who may not have a clear pro-Western profile and that we may need a little more time to complete this work.” The Government Political System Commission, chaired by Mr. Abazovic, on Tuesday unanimously proposed a package of sanctions against Russia, which had previously been approved by official Brussels.
The war in Ukraine has divided political actors in Montenegro into two groups. But while most Montenegrin officials have backed all EU action related to the war in Ukraine, pro-Serbian and pro-Russian parties as well as the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro are pushing for open support for Russia and its president Vladimir Putin.
