The Archbishop of South Africa Emeritus Desmond Tutu passed away the day before at the age of 90.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was recognized worldwide for his anti-apartheid activism and as a defender of human rights.
Emeritus Desmond Tutu was much more than a spiritual leader. He spent his life defending civil rights and speaking out against injustice, corruption and oppression.
“He wanted every human being on Earth to experience the freedom, peace, and joy that we can all enjoy if we truly respect one another. And because he worshiped the Lord, he did not fear anyone. In 1984 Emeritus Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his activism against the racist apartheid regime in South Africa.
He sheltered Nelson Mandela the first day of his release from prison.
The archbishop then introduced him (Nelson Mandela) to the public as the country’s first colored president in 1994.
Emeritus Desmond Tutu was in charge of the country’s post-apartheid recovery process. He chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, during the hearings of which horrific confessions and injustices were heard.
Despite the hardships he faced, Emeritus Desmond Tutu will be remembered for his peaceful activism and ability to forgive.
World leaders react
President Joe Biden expressed his grief over the death of Desmond Tutu, the human rights defender who helped bring down apartheid.
In a statement, President and First Lady Jill Biden said they were deeply saddened to learn of his death.
“His courage and moral clarity helped inspire our commitment to change American policy toward the repressive apartheid regime in South Africa.“, It was said, among other things, in their statement.
Former United States President Barack Obama has called Emeritus Desmond Tutun “an advisor, a friend and a moral compass to him and many others.”
The Dalai Lama said Tutu “was fully committed to serving his brothers and sisters for a greater, common good.”
