Large crowds had gathered today in the streets of Mumbai for the traditional parade marking the New Year in the western state of Marashtra.
Women on motorcycles, singers and dancers, took part in the West India Parade for the first day of the local new year.
The parade known as “Gudi Padva” is celebrated by the Marathi and Konkani communities in honor of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, according to the Hindu faith.
The day also marks the arrival of spring and is accompanied by prayers and home decoration with flowers and colorful artistic drawings.
“We wake up in the morning on the first day of the year, we celebrate by starting the prayers and then with the parade in the city”, says an interviewed student.
“We are from Marashtra and we celebrate the new year. It is like a rally and we are all decorated with cultural style, with traditional costumes “, she adds.
