A few days before the trial of Greek pilot Babis Anagnostopoulos, who is accused of killing his wife Caroline Krauts, psychologist Eleni Mylonopoulou broke the silence. The couple went on visits before the macabre crime, so it is considered a key witness as it reveals unknown aspects of the gruesome event.
At the time when Babis was trying to dispel the murder allegations from himself, he threatened the psychologist not to speak. In the interview for “Protothema”, Mylonopoulou raises the question of how he will dare to look Babis in the eye after the whole event.
“I will look him in the eye, but will he dare to look at me? “All I want him to answer is why and with what right,” said the psychologist.
Question: When did you meet them?
Mylonopoulou: On November 17, 2020 they came for the first time and the sessions ended at the end of January. From the first visit it seemed that the couple had an unhealthy relationship. Because when the two came, Anagnostopoulos took the floor to explain the purpose of the visit, while Caroline did not speak at all. Anagnostopoulos was trying to convince me how happy he was and that the only problem was depression from birth. He showed me photos from the wedding, told me how they met, a fairy tale. He tried to push me into the bubble in which he had also inserted Caroline.
When I told her to leave us alone to see what Caroline meant to me, her first words were: “I want to leave home. I do not want her, I want to take my baby and leave. “I’m looking for a house.” When I asked him the reason, he said: “Because I want to go to a pastry school. And when I asked him who will help you financially, he said:” Mom sends me, but now Babis takes what he sends me. “When I leave, I will take them.” When I asked her why she did not tell her mother about the situation, she said: “Because I do not want to tell her, I do not want to put her in this situation.”
Question: Why did they interrupt the sessions?
Mylonopoulou:Caroline had started to open up to me a lot and tell me very delicate personal issues. Just then I suddenly got a message that we were going to stop the sessions.
Question: What did he do?
Mylonopoulou:He never admitted it. He told me it was Caroline’s wish. There was something strange about this couple: I could never contact Caroline directly. He never answered the phone. As Caroline as Babis. One day, an hour after I called him, Babis picked me up himself.
Question: And what did he tell you?
That Caroline did not like him. That they were no longer related to each other. And that was true because I had heard it from Caroline. However Carolina had told me that they slept together, that she leaned on her chest when she was lying down. And to calm things down, I said: Calm down, you are 32 years old, she is 20, you have to take a step back and show understanding. I even asked her: “Why did you push her so hard after the abortion to get pregnant again?”. I received no response.
Question: Why do you think he did it?
Mylonopoulou: A man who always wants to manipulate his partner always creates commitments. She was isolated, had no money and Babis kept her behind under the pretext that “she had the responsibility of the child”.
When Caroline starts telling me that she no longer loves Babi, that she wants to take her child and leave, that this bothers her and makes her life difficult, she isolates herself, if she wants to go out with a friend, Babis should go too. Caroline had reached the point where she was telling me, “I fell in love with her, but now I hate her. I am in love with the face, with the appearance, but I hate the man, his character. “I hate the man I live with.”
Question: Was he afraid of Dad?
Mylonopoulou: In the end yes. Told me in January. Until then he had said nothing. The sessions continued and each time Caroline opened up even more. So he began to say a few things about Baba’s work.
He also started work on Sundays. The Sunday they were going to spend together and he was going to help the baby and he left because he had clients who would take him somewhere. When he told me this, I was surprised. But Caroline was an inexperienced, sensitive, and honest girl. He had placed a tracker on her iPhone to know at any moment where she was. But I could never talk on the phone with Caroline.
In one of the sessions I said: “A house does not create relationships. You are just prolonging your torture. You need to talk to your mother. When the two came again, Caroline did not speak, while Babis told me that they would try to be together again. The next week Caroline came and told me that her parents would give her 55 thousand euros, while his parents 25-30 thousand euros to get a house. Discussions started because Mom gave Caroline more money, but she did not receive a penny.
Question: And the sessions stopped with a message?
Mylonopoulou: Yes. Throughout the sessions, when Caroline spoke to me, she would ask, “Are you listening to us?” In January he confirmed to me that he was scared. “I do not want him to listen to us,” Caroline said. I had asked him many times if he had any abusive behavior. If he had handcuffed her or physically raped her. He had never mentioned such a thing to me. At the last session, however, Caroline was very scared, I tried to persuade her to talk to her mother, she refused.
Next, I told her to seek the advice of a lawyer, in fact I gave her the cell phone of my lawyer Stamatias Markou. I knew that Markou handled cases of raped women free of charge. Unfortunately, she never got it.
