Four years before she brutally murdered professional cyclist Moirah Wilson who she considered a love rival, Kaitlin Armstrong had attended an intensive course of yoga classes in Indonesia, where colleagues said she suffered panic attacks as she struggled to banish her ‘inner demons’.
The 34-year-old accused murderer, recently arrested after a period on the run outside the US, had completed the four-week luxury course in Canggu, on the island of Bali, in early 2018 where she had learned to become a ‘Viniasa yoga’ instructor.
At the ‘initiation’ ceremony of the 200-hour course, Armstrong tearfully told the circle of 25 participants that she had come to Bali because she wanted to change “her personal” things.
Armstrong never revealed what they were, but one of her colleagues in Bali told the US edition of The Sun that the reasons were very sad and sensitive.
“Many of us who had gone there were not happy with the situations in our country, and she was one of them,” said the witness, who wished to remain anonymous.
“But the way she spoke, it seemed that she wanted to change something, there was a pain in her eyes, even though she had a gentle soul. She didn’t want to have this pain and was looking for protection or change to heal or eliminate her inner conflict.”
The one who would later turn into a murderer was reported by her classmates to be polite but did not form close or strong friendships.
The witness says that every attempt to make friends with her was blocked, especially after an incident during a dinner with the group at the beginning of the course.
“We were with the group, about seven or eight of us, and one evening we went to a restaurant for dinner and returned to the rented house of one of the boys of the group.”
“There she started an episode of deep panic, apparently from an allergic reaction to a food, but in fact she was exaggerating and it was not understood what it was”.
After a minor skin irritation on her chest, the normally calm Armstrong began shaking and gasping for breath in what the witness called ‘an unnecessary episode of hysteria’.
Armstrong then calmed down after taking an anti-allergy and began speaking to the group in calm tones.
In the following weeks Armstrong continued to maintain her position as one of the quieter members of the group but still seemed happier than she had been when she arrived in Canggu.
When it came time to talk about everyone’s experiences on the course, the witness says of Armstrong: “When it was her turn to speak she was very, very grateful and couldn’t get her point across, but she was trying to get us he thanked everyone for the experience”.
“At first she had tears of sadness, but now at the end they were tears of joy and gratitude.”
After completing the course in Bali, Armstrong returned to the US to work with a real estate agency in Austin, Texas.
The witness says she never heard from her again until Armstrong was announced as the prime suspect in Moriah “Mo” Wilson’s murder.
Wilson, a 25-year-old professional cyclist, was shot dead on May 11, shortly after having dinner with Armstrong’s boyfriend, Colin Strickland, with whom they were fellow cyclists but reportedly had a brief fling.
Strickland told police she had been dating Armstrong for three years, although they broke up briefly in October 2021, when he met Wilson.
Armstrong was arrested last week in Costa Rica and has since been extradited to the US to face murder charges.
To escape detection Armstrong had drastically changed her appearance and paid about $7,000 for a nose job, dyed her red hair brown and cut it short.
Investigators said she had traveled to Costa Rica with a passport of another person, preferably of her younger sister.
Armstrong and Strickland had been in a relationship for three years, while the man’s brief relationship with the cyclist took place during a period when the couple were temporarily separated from each other.
The pair eventually got back together, but Armstrong found out about his affair and was described as “trembling with rage” of jealousy.
At this time it is believed that unfortunately Strickland had purchased two 9mm pistols one for himself and one for his girlfriend Armstrong.
When Wilson’s body was found, it was discovered that she had been shot multiple times with a 9mm handgun.
Forensic testing showed that the gun purchased by Strickland had been used for Wilson’s murder.
