Despite being acquitted of terrorism charges, a Muslim cleric from Kenya refuses to be released from prison because he feels safer there.
Guyo Gorsa Buru says he is terrified he will be taken hostage and executed by government agents, as he believes happened to other terror suspects in the country.
He was arrested in 2018 and charged with possession of material promoting the Somali militant group al-Shabab.
But the judge in Nairobi ruled that the state had failed to prove the charges against Sheikh Buru and the lawyer demanded that the state guarantee protection for his client after his release.
But Judge Wendy Micheni said that if the cleric wanted to continue in the Kamiti high-security prison, he had to pay.
Other clerics suspected of being linked to the Islamist group al-Shabab have been killed in the past even though authorities have refused to participate in the acts.
In April 2014, Abubakar Sharif Ahmed, known as Macaburi, was shot dead in Mombasa as soon as he came out of court – this came after the killing of two other imams in the coastal city.
Amnesty International and other agencies have accused Kenyan police of brutal tactics such as kidnappings and extrajudicial killings.
