In an openly challenging move for Moscow, NATO Special Envoy for the South Caucasus and Central Asia Javier Colomina stated that the alliance would not compromise on its open door policy under Russian pressure, but could: increase its ranks with other neighbors of this country, such as Georgia.
Georgia, Colomina said, must now take steps to prepare for membership in the globe’s largest military alliance, ranging from internal reforms to resolving territorial disputes.
“We have been very clear with the Russians: we will not compromise on our basic principles and our open door policy. We will not compromise on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine or Georgia“, He said.
Georgia aspires to join NATO and is one of its closest allies, participating in military exercises and missions with member countries. But it faces major obstacles from Moscow, which backs the country’s two separatist regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Meanwhile, the deployment of weapons and soldiers on the Russian-Ukrainian border has sparked debates in Finland and Sweden over whether to join NATO in order to protect themselves from any possible Moscow aggression.
