We do not see the withdrawal of Russian troops in Ukraine, on the contrary, we expect further attacks, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in a position that seems in line with the skepticism of US officials regarding Moscow’s claim that it is withdrawing troops. from the areas around Kiev and Chenihiv, as a sign of goodwill for peace negotiations.
Stoltenberg: According to our intelligence data, Russian units are not retreating but are repositioning themselves. Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and strengthen its offensive in the Donbas region. At the same time, it seeks to maintain pressure on Kiev and other cities. So we can expect more attacks that will bring even more suffering.
We have heard recent statements that Russia will reduce military operations around Kiev and in northern Ukraine. But Russia has consistently lied about its intentions. So we can judge her today only for her actions and not for her words. “It is clear that we have seen very little willingness on the part of Russia to find a political solution,” he added.
Stoltenberg argued that there is a close link between what happens on the battlefield and developments at the negotiating table, and that, he said, allows us to provide support to Ukraine and strengthen its position in relation to peace talks.
