NATO is ready to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia for years, including helping Kiev move from Soviet-era weapons to modern Western weapons and systems, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday.
“We have to be prepared for the long term. There is absolutely the possibility that this war will drag on and last for months and maybe years. “NATO allies are preparing to provide long-term support to Ukraine.” said Stoltenberg.
Most of the heavy weapons NATO countries have sent to Ukraine so far are Soviet-made weapons, but the United States and several other allies have begun supplying Kiev with recently produced weapons.
Stoltenberg’s statement came after the Kremlin warned that Western arms supplies to Ukraine were provoking instability in Europe.
“In the West, they are openly calling on Kiev to attack Russia, including the use of weapons obtained from NATO countries.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow.
“I do not advise you to further test our patience“.
Russian President Vladimir Putin himself has said that these large arms shipments are part of a broader plan by the United States and its allies to destroy Russia – and has promised that it will never succeed.
Putin says a “special military operation” in Ukraine is needed because the United States was using Ukraine to threaten Russia, and Moscow needed to defend itself against the persecution of Russian-speaking people.
