NATO says it is ready for talks on reciprocal arms control with Moscow, adding that the alliance is united against the “real” risk of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
NATO foreign ministers met in a video conference to discuss Russia’s military presence on Ukraine’s borders. Moscow has meanwhile deployed approximately 100,000 troops on Ukraine’s borders, and alliance Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the concentration of Russian troops on Ukraine’s borders is continuing.
“We support Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said, adding that NATO could not compromise on the sovereignty of nations and would allow each nation to choose its own path to membership.
“We are ready to commit to controlling conventional and nuclear weapons with Russia, but this must be reciprocal,” Stoltenberg said. “We can not end up in a situation where we have second-class members of NATO and where NATO as an alliance is not allowed to protect them.
“The risk of conflict is real. “Russia’s aggressive actions seriously undermine the security order in Europe.”
Russia’s claims
In December, Russia submitted to the United States a list of complaints and demands, including the end of NATO deployments on the alliance’s eastern flank and further non-expansion of NATO.
NATO has formally rejected all of these demands, saying Russia has no veto power over countries that join the alliance or cannot dictate its positions.
Recently, the governments of Sweden and Finland, non-NATO countries, said they saw their decision to join NATO as their right to self-determination following the deployment of Russian troops near the border. with Ukraine.
Russian officials and NATO representatives will meet on Wednesday (12.01) in Geneva within the NATO-Russia Council. This is the first meeting since 2019./DW
