The issue on which Ankara bases its opposition to Finland and Sweden’s applications for membership in the alliance was described by him as legitimate.
“When a vital ally, a key one like Turkey, raises such concerns, then we should sit down and take them seriously, because they are legitimate. “This is about terrorism, this is about arms exports.”said Jens Stoltenberg.
Sweden and Finland applied to join the Western defense alliance last month in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine.
But the two Nordic countries have faced opposition from Turkey, which has accused them of supporting and harboring Kurdish militants and other groups it considers terrorist.
Stoltenberg recalled the importance of Turkey because of its strategic location in the Black Sea, between Europe and the Middle East, and cited Ankara’s support for Ukraine since Russia sent troops there on February 24.
“We must remember and understand that no NATO ally has suffered more terrorist attacks than Turkey.”he said, adding that talks will continue, although there is still no indication of progress in the negotiations.
