Opposition politician Alexei Navalny said he had been informed by investigators that he faced new charges of “creating an extremist group” in connection with his Anti-Corruption Foundation and other affiliated groups.
Through a series of Twitter posts on May 31, in which he mocked Russian officials over a series of cases being raised against him, the Kremlin critic said he was being formally accused of setting up the Anti-Corruption Foundation, an institution that has exposed corruption. among officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Maybe Putin does not hate me, maybe he secretly adores me. “That’s why he wants me to be hidden in an underground bunker, surrounded by trustworthy people like him,” Navalny wrote.
“How can I explain the fact that not even eight days have passed since the 9-year sentence came into force against me and today the investigator comes and officially initiates a new case against me.”
The Anti-Corruption Foundation and other groups linked to Navalny, as well as his political movement, were declared “extremist organizations” by the Russian authorities in June 2021.
Several Navalny associates have already been charged with the same charge.
“It turns out that I have created an extremist group to initiate hatred against officials and oligarchs. “For this charge, they can add another 15 years to prison,” he said.
Navalny was arrested in January last year after returning to Moscow from Germany, where he was treated for an almost deadly poisoning, which according to European laboratories contained the content of the nerve agent, Novichok.
He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for violations of an earlier suspended sentence.
Last week, a court sentenced him to 9 years in prison for misappropriation of funds.
