Omicron’s fears have pushed Italy to take stronger new measures to protect itself from the disturbing variant of the coronavirus.
Stricter rules for travelers from EU countries have already entered into force in the neighboring country.
All travelers – even those vaccinated – to enter Italy must submit a negative test for coronavirus, said Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza, who signed the relevant decree.
The unvaccinated, the post-vaccine, will also have to go through a five-day quarantine.
Until now, only EU proof of vaccination, service or a negative test was sufficient for EU citizens to enter Italy. The new rules will be in effect until January 31st.
Over 20,000 new infections and 120 deaths were recorded in Italy on Tuesday.
The government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi in late November agreed to expand the groups that should be vaccinated. Until now the obligation to vaccinate in Italy applied only to health care personnel.
With the expiration of the vaccination certificate after nine months, it becomes necessary to renew the vaccine for those who have mandatory vaccination.
Exceptions are people whose health condition could be endangered by the vaccine.
