A Russian warship under construction has suffered about $ 300 million in damage following a massive fire that broke out at the shipyard.
The fire that started at the weekend on the construction site of St. Petersburg has caused serious obstacles in the maritime modernization of the Kremlin, writes the British tabloid Daily Mail.
The footage showed serious damage to the new warship that would hold the new Mach-9 high-speed hypersonic missiles.
Large flames and dense smoke were coming out of the Provornyy (Flexible) corvette at the Severnaya Verf construction site, where it is being built.
Russia said there was no damage to board or personnel on board but some media outlets said it had been hospitalized after the crash and the US network Military.com said there were at least two injured.
A criminal investigation has been opened into the fire at Provornyy – the warship supposed to be armed with the new Zircon hypersonic missiles – otherwise known as the Tskirkon.
The rocket that reaches a maximum speed of 9000 km per hour is considered unstoppable by current technology and will initially be installed on Project 20385 type corvettes such as the Provornyy.
Last month it was revealed that Russia had successfully tested Zircon missile missiles, from White Sea warships.
The missile hit the target 250 miles away from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, announced the Russian Ministry of Defense on November 29th.
Putin reportedly awarded Zircon’s creator Boris Obnosov, head of the tactical missile corporation, the Hero of Russia medal.
