A severe tragedy has struck Cameroon as at least 16 people were found dead yesterday from a devastating fire at a nightclub
Eight other people were injured when flames broke out on the terrace of Liv’s club in the capital Yaounde caused by fireworks being used at the site, according to the government statement.
The development comes as many tourists have come to Cameroon, as the host country of the African Cup of Nations football competition.
The fire had quickly spread to other premises, including kitchen gas cylinders around 02.00 yesterday morning.
Initially staff said the fire was caused by a short circuit.
About 100 people had gathered today near the morgue of the military hospital in anticipation of the news for their loved ones, reports the AFP network.
“I have no information, I woke up this morning and was told that my 38-year-old son had died,” said a woman who gave her name as Fidele.
Her daughter Claude said: “I was expecting my brother and his friends to come back yesterday but they did not come. “In the morning I got some phone calls asking if my brother was alive or dead, so I came to the morgue and identified his body.”
A security guard at the scene said that “everything happened very quickly” and that “there are many victims”.
President Paul Bia has called for calm and ensured that footballers and fans are safe.
“The tragedy was caused by the explosion of fireworks, which are used regularly in these places. “The fire first consumed the roof of the building and then caused two explosions,” said government spokesman Rene Emmanuel Sadi.
“We are still at the level of investigations to find out the names and nationalities of the dead and injured,” he added.
