Russia’s warnings that it may close the gas taps again have not prevented the European Union from going all the way with plans to impose new sanctions on Moscow.
The move comes after the bloc’s member states backed a series of measures, including a ban on Russian gold imports and tightening controls on the export of some high-tech goods, and despite Russia restarting gas supplies through its largest pipeline. large, Nord Stream 1, after a 10-day break for maintenance work.
European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that strengthening the sanctions and extending them in time sends “a strong signal to Moscow that we will continue to exert pressure as long as necessary”.
There are still no details on the new sanctions as they are expected to be published in the EU’s Official Journal.
Throughout the week, European officials have sought to tighten the broad package of sanctions against Russia, adding a decision to ban the export of gold, in the hope that the measures will have a decisive impact on the war in Ukraine.
“At the moment ‘the most important thing is to stop Russian gold’, the second largest export industry of this country, after energy. This is the most important part of our latest plan, focused mostly on improving the implementation of existing sanctions.”said Josep Borell.
Last month the group of seven of the world’s most industrialized nations, the G7, committed to a ban on Russian gold, pointing out that Moscow has used it to sidestep the impact of several rounds of sanctions imposed by the West. In addition to the restrictive measures, the EU also decided to provide another 500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine.
