Today was held the next session in the Albanian Parliament.
In his speech, Interior Minister Bledi Çuçi presented the agreement with Greece that will be submitted for approval.
The Minister said that Albania and Greece will set up a directorate in Kakavija with joint staff, to prevent a series of crimes such as smuggling, migrant trafficking and narcotics.
Çuçi said that the center will be staffed by Greek and Albanian police and customs officers who will exchange information on crime prevention, mainly at the border.
Çuçi: Today we have brought for approval an agreement with Greece to set up a joint center in Kakavija of police cooperation between the two countries. The agreement is in line with our intention to make Albania a country with an open but secure border. It serves the free movement of citizens and goods. The essence of the agreement is the establishment of a group of experts from both countries where we will exchange information to prevent criminal activity, smuggling, trafficking in migrants. Exchanging info between countries is a well-known practice, but setting up such a unique structure facilitates this process.
If once prickly walls and fences were erected today we are setting up a joint expert structure with police officers who will exchange information in real time. We will take into account that the center in its activity does not overlap with the relevant authority, but only makes them more efficient. The center is like a one stop shop, everything related to information is processed quickly, national data is accessed and every possible institution that has information is contacted. We have taken several initiatives of regional cooperation, agreements with Kosovo or regional ones and those within the Open Balkans.
This year, through a project, the modernization of the border point through technology systems will be perfected. We aim at digitalization at border crossings for citizens and vehicles by interfacing systems and calculating procedures. We aim to increase border crossings. I invite you to vote in favor so that our efforts have a more efficient instrument available such as the common center.
