Under pressure from the Kremlin, one of Russia’s last independent television stations, Rain, was forced to shut down indefinitely. The reason for this move was his realistic reports on the war in Ukraine.
Russia’s telecommunications regulator has already blocked Rain TV, threatening and accusing it of “inciting extremism, misinforming Russian citizens, and inciting unrest and organizing protests.”
But even in the last broadcast, this tv appeared challenging. “No to war,” said Nataliya Sindeyeva, one of the channel’s founders, as employees were seen leaving the television studio. At that moment, the ballet “Swan Lake” appeared on the screen.
Russian lawmakers have passed a bill condemning the spread of “fake news” about military operations, at the time of the closure of independent media covering the Russian war in Ukraine.
The draft law, adopted on March 4, will be added as a separate article in the Criminal Code, “to prevent the discrediting of the armed forces of the Russian Federation during their operations to protect the interests of the Russian Federation and its citizens, and to maintain international peace and security ”.
The new law provides for sentences of up to 10 years in prison for individuals found guilty of these violations.
