North Korea launched two more ballistic missiles on January 14.
This is the third ballistic missile test this state has done in two weeks. The announcement of the new tests came after the United States imposed new sanctions on Pyongyang.
South Korea said it had detected what it said looked like two short-range ballistic missiles. According to South Korea, the missiles were fired east from Pyongyang Province, located on the west coast of North Korea.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Coast Guard reported that the North launched what was supposed to be a ballistic missile. The launched missiles landed at sea outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, NHK media reported, citing an unidentified official by Japan’s Defense Minister.
North Korea has argued that missile testing is a legitimate right to self-defense and has said the US is deliberately escalating the situation by imposing new sanctions, state media reported on January 14, citing the Foreign Ministry.
On January 12, the US imposed new sanctions on North Korea over recent ballistic missile tests. Washington has called on the United Nations Security Council to impose new sanctions, saying the latest tests violate UN Security Council resolutions.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States had made it clear it had no hostile intentions toward North Korea and was ready to engage in unconditional talks, but said the tests were “deeply destabilizing.” REL
